July 15, 1910, to Sept. 12, 2004

Rhodes Kauffman Scherer, 94, of Nevada, passed away on Sunday, September 12, at the Story County Long Term Care in Nevada. Graveside services were held on Thursday, September 16 at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. Military rites were conducted by the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48.

Memorials may be directed to the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48. Arrangements were entrusted to Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada.

Rhodes was born July 15, 1910 in Evansville, Indiana to Emory and Nela (Rhodes) Scherer. He graduated from Evansville College in 1933. Rhodes served in the U.S. Army from 1933-1937 and in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. He was a microbiologist by profession and retired from the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames. Rhodes married Alice Louise Hunter on November 23, 1940 in Washington, D.C. They had a lively time in the theater until R. Hamilton Scherer was born in 1949. Then he took up tennis, gun marksmanship, stamp collecting, and photography. Rhodes played tennis in the Iowa Olympics until he was 83 and he continued to play tennis until he was 88. He was a member of the Ames Tennis & Racquet Club, National Rifle Association and the Des Moines Philatelic Club.

Rhodes is survived by his grandchildren, Bonita Jesse of Elk City, Kansas, Raelene Aleman Chance of Nevada, Robin Willig of Dewey, Oklahoma, Jennifer Allford of Barttlesville, Oklahoma, Nickie Tiedt of Arlington, Texas, Rena Scherer of Barttlesville, Oklahoma and Rodney Scherer of Nevada; 12 great grandchildren.

Rhodes is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Alice Louise on December 23, 1995, his son, Rhodes Hamilton on March 10, 2004, and a grandson, Edward Scherer.
