Milt was born February 18, 1920 in Dubuque, Iowa to J. Edward and Hazel (Spielman) Mussehl. He graduated from Dubuque High School in 1938 and from the University of Dubuque in 1942 with a degree in music. Milt then entered the US Navy serving during World War II. He played trumpet in the Navy band in Indianhead, Maryland and on the US Princeton Aircraft Carrier. While in the Navy, Milt also served briefly as an instructor at the Navy School of Music.
After he was discharged from the Navy, Milt taught instrumental music at Greene and Allison, Iowa before coming to Story City in 1948, where he taught until 1960. Milt earned his Masters of Music Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1954.

Milt married Dorothy Jurgens on August 3, 1949. She passed away on June 7, 1983. While teaching at Story City Milt’s students earned many 1st division awards at various state contests and was featured band at the Iowa Band Masters Convention in 1959. Milt was past member of the Story City Lions Club, Story City American Legion Post 59, director of the Story City Men’s Chorus, past president of the Roland-Story Board, past president of Northwestern Mutual Life association of agents, past president of the executive committee of the Iowa High School Music Association and a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served as past president and director of the choir.

Milton D. Mussehl, 93 of Story City died December 5, 2013 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

He is survived by his two daughters, Jean A. Siddle of Estes Park, CO and Kristin J. Oldson and husband Rob of Okoboji, Iowa; two grandchildren, Lauren Oldson and Joe Oldson; and his special friend of many years Verda Coulson of Ankeny.
Milt was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy; son-in-law Herb Siddle and brother Robert Mussehl.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
