Ames man killed in car crash
George N. Polhemus, 65, 3303 Woodland St., was one of two men who sustained fatal injuries in a two-car collision near Eldora, Thursday.
A third man remained hospitalized today in a serious condition.
Also killed in the accident was Jess Broer, 55, New Providnece, Will Ernest Broer, 26, driver of one of the vehicles, was in an Eldora hospital today.
State highway patrolman said Polhemus' car apparently skidded into a slushy, ice-covered shoulder and then careened back into the path of the Broer car. Mr. Polhemus was killed instantly; the elder Broer died early this morning.
The accident occurred at the east junction of U.S. 65 and Iowa 57 about seven miles west of Eldora.
Mr. Polhemus, who had been employed in the motor inspection department of the Iowa Highway Commission since 1923, had driven more than 300,000 miles in his work without a reportable accident.
Born at Holdredge, Neb., he attended the University of Nebraska and Iowa State University. He served in the navy in 1917-18.
He was a member of Collegiate Presbyterian Church here.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie; three sons, Martin of Wayne, Neb., Dale of Ames and John Thomas of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, Arthur of Holdredge, Neb. and Charles of Houston, Tex.; three sisters, Carrie Polhemus of San Gabriel, Calif., Mrs. Winifred Simmons of Berkeley, Calif. and Mrs. Alixe Lindstrom of Holdredge, Neb. and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Collegiate Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John G. Davies will officiate. Burial is to be in Ames Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established; gifts may be left at the church.
