Cecil Earl Spatcher
April 3, 1918 - October 27, 2013

Cecil Spatcher, age 95, of Ames, died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines on October 27, 2013. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 31st at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way. A celebration of life funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1st at First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave, with burial to follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Cecil was born in Fayette, Iowa, on April 3, 1918 to George and Hannah Spatcher. He got his B.S. from Upper Iowa and obtained his M.S. from the University of Iowa. He played all four major sports in college. He coached football, basketball, and track, and was a high school biology teacher. He was inducted into the Iowa Track Hall of Fame and the Upper Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition, he received several honors for his coaching. Cecil was a member of Arcadia Lodge #249 A.F. & A.M., American Legion, Moose Lodge #520, National Education Association, and Red Friars. He married Lurene Spatcher in 1941. From this union, they had three children; David Spatcher (Patti); Sandy Hempe (Mark); Julie Reid (Russell), eight grandchildren, and ten great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lurene, and one sister, Gertrude Mullins.

Cecil enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, bowling, and he loved dancing with his wife. He cherished his family and remembered details with astonishing accuracy. He loved being involved in young people's lives and focused on building their confidence and character.

Memorials may be directed to Ames Education Foundation, P.O. Box 1125, Ames, Iowa 50014 in memory of Cecil Spatcher.
