Norman H. Baker, 77, of Huxley died, Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.
Norman was born April 9, 1936 at Cambridge, Iowa, the son of Herbert and Ruth (McHone) Baker. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1954 and attended college for two years. He served in the US Marines Corps toward the end of the Korean Conflict. Norman was united in marriage to Linda Romp on September 3, 1960 in Randall, Iowa. Norman was Deputy Director of Information Technology for the Iowa Department of Transportation and then became the Director of the State of Iowa Department of Personnel. He retired in 1998. Norman was a member of Fjeldberg and Nazareth Lutheran Church and, Mathis-Wire American Legion Post #233 of Cambridge, a member of the Aging Resource Council in Des Moines, a member of the Older Iowa Legislature, was one of the founders of the Ballard Golf and Country Club, and a founding member of the House of Knowledge in Cambridge. He was very civic minded and had served on the Cambridge and Huxley City Councils, the Ballard School Board, and had served as a little league coach. Norman had served as President of HEEP, Highway Engineers Exchange Program and was a member of ASHTO. Norman was an avid Hawkeye and Ballard Wrestling fan.
Norman is survived by his wife, Linda, of Huxley; his son and daughter-in-law: Mark and Gina Baker of Huxley; a daughter and son-in-law: Torie and Randy Hefel of Iowa City; four grandchildren: Grant (Maggie) Baker, Sarah Baker, Weston Baker and Rachael Hefel.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his brother: Douglas Baker; and three sisters-in-law: Donna Baker, Mary Romp and Melva Voss.
