Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Glen Evan Miller left his home on earth on Tuesday, July 23 surrounded by family members. On Thursday, July 25, 2:00 p.m. Glen will be buried with military honors at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery, I-80 exit 113.

Glen was born in Milwaukee, WI on October 14, 1942. He attended high school at Elkview High School near Charleston, West Virginia. Classmate Ray Evans comments, “Glen and I were close friends and the '50s version of fellow nerds of a sort in our Elkview High School years.” At age 16, Glen enrolled in Iowa State College to study engineering. He received practical training at the Iowa Highway Commission.

Glen interrupted his education to serve in the military from 1965-69. Long-time friend Ray Fundyga explains: “He studied Thai language at the Defense Language Institute (West Coast) at the Presidio, Monterey, CA. Glen served with, first, the U.S. Army 83rd Radio Research Unit, Bong Khen, Thailand and then the Advisory Team to the Royal Thai Armed Forces Security Center, being part of the Sabertooth II detachment.”

After an honorable discharge, Glen returned to Iowa State University and received his Civil Engineering degree and took his professional engineering exam.

He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 43 years, retiring in 2005. In the Ames office, Glen worked in Soils and in the Materials Lab. In 1986, he moved to Atlantic, Iowa to become the District 4 Materials Engineer, coordinating projects in the newly constructed Materials Lab building. He also became the Construction Engineer for 6 months, following a retirement and during a hiring freeze. His final years were as the Construction Engineer for District 4.

Glen and Lois were married on June 24, 1984. Life was good. Glen would register for an International Conference at the drop of a hat. They attended conferences in Lausanne, Switzerland, Athens, Greece and twice in Hunan Province, China. They celebrated his retirement by taking a second trip to Vienna, Austria to attend the well-known Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concerts.

Closer to home, Glen attended the Transportation Research Board (TRB) conference in Washington, DC for 30 years. Glen attended many committees and served several terms in a chairman position.

Glen cherished his membership at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames. He participated in the church’s bike rides across Wisconsin and Minnesota. Glen acquired professional engineering certification (ASCE), and enjoyed lifetime membership as an Iowa State alum. He enjoyed his membership in the Ikes, occasionally using his skid loader to widen the roads at the local Izaak Walton League park. He proudly wore his leather jacket signifying his life membership in the NRA. Dear to Glen’s heart was his Legion membership and attending Saturday night steak dinners.

Glen treasured his families. His children include Ae (Jim) Todsen and Tim (Tara) Miller. He has a granddaughter, Jessica, and a grandson, Joseph. His sisters include Susan (George) Huskamp and Gail Imel. He was called “Uncle” by nieces, Courtney and Sarah and nephews, Russell and Joe.

Preceding Glen in death were his parents, Robert Harold and Dorothy Margaret (Stecker) Miller; and his first wife, Cheusai.

His step-family includes daughters, Linda (Brian) Grimm and Laura Wright (John Jones); and son, Larry Bush (June Gregory). Grandchildren include: Nathan (Ryan) Bush and Tanner (Cindy) Bush, and Jared and Autumn Bush; Audrey (Josh) Hinote, Keith (Lindsey), and Joel (Mary) Monthei; Alex (Kerry) and Aaron (Tonya) Grimm. Great-grandchildren include: Noah, Carter and Ava Hinote; Lilian and Katelyn Monthei; Caden and Trenton Bush; Regan and Makayla Grimm and Kaley and Brooklyn Grimm. Daughter-in-law Deanna Bush passed away in January 2010. Great-granddaughter, Abbigail Grace Grimm, passed away in 2009

To quote Glen’s long-time Army buddy: “I will miss "Somchai". I shan't forget him, that's for sure.”

Memorial contributions may be directed to Collegiate Presbyterian Church or Matthew 25 House.

On Sunday, July 28, 7:00-8:30 p.m., an open house “Reminisce and Refresh” gathering will be held in the home of Dennis Wendell. A second gathering is scheduled for Friday, August 2, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Chocolaterie Stam, on Main Street in Ames. Lois will play Stam’s grand piano, selecting some of Glen’s favorite music.
