Geraldine Annabelle (Jay) Burg passed away on May 24, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was born on January 15, 1924, in Clemons, Iowa, to Charley and Lillian Jay. On October 17, 1942, she married John Lavern Burg in State Center, Iowa. To their union ten children were born. Throughout her early married life Geraldine was a wife, mother and homemaker. Later she worked for many years at R.H. Donnelly Marketing in Nevada, Iowa. In addition to being with her children, 19 grandchildren 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson, Geraldine enjoyed raising plants and flowers and watching birds outside her window.

Geraldine is survived by nine children: Patricia Geer of Colo; Charles (Joan) Burg of Ames; John (Barbara) Burg of Gloucester, Virginia; Gerald (Graciela) Burg of St. Anthony; Mary (Alan) Christy of Ames; Marcus (Jo) Burg of McCallsburg; Elizabeth Umbaugh of State Center; Lois (Al Davis) Burg of State Center; Susan (Darrell) Maasdam of Lynnville. She also is survived by one sister, Ardis Wilson of Colo; sisters-in-law Mildred Jay of Boone and Hazel Burton of Newton; brother-in-law Richard (Short) Wilson of Nevada; and numerous nieces and nephews. Geraldine was preceded in death by her husband in 1978, son Patrick in 1961, son-in-law Kenneth Umbaugh in 1997, two grandsons, three sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames with Father James Secora officiating. A rosary will be recited at 11:30 a.m. with the family receiving friends at the church one hour prior to Mass. A private burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in St. Anthony.

Geraldine’s family thanks all who provided wonderful care to her, especially her doctors at McFarland Clinic, the staffs at Mary Greeley Medical Center, the Israel Family Hospice House, and Rolling Green Village. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in loving memory of Geraldine.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing is in charge of arrangements.
