Janet Anderson
June 8, 1925 - March 20, 2013

Janet Anderson passed away March 20, 2013. She was born June 8, 1925, in Nevada, to Pete and Milly (Frederiksen) Mathison. A 1943 graduate of Nevada High School, she then attended Monticello College in Illinois for one year. She graduated from Drake University in Des Moines with a bachelor's degree in education. Janet taught third grade in Fort Dodge. She later worked in personnel for Lutheran Brotherhood in Minneapolis, Iowa State University and Mathison Ford in Nevada.

On Aug. 5, 1958, she married Joel Anderson in Des Moines. Together they farmed in McCallsburg and Roland, and later moved to Nevada. Their daughter, Ann, was born in Ames. Janet was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Mary's Circle, PEO, and Kensington. She loved visiting her daughter in Fort Collins, Colo., and vacationing at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. Clear Lake was another favorite place that held many fond memories. She enjoyed playing bridge and Scrabble, volunteering and being involved at church. Janet was a sweet, kind and gentle person that had a quiet strength. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Anderson, and nephew, Matt Mathison, of Irmo, S.C. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joel on March 5, 2006; and her brother, Fred Mathison on January 6, 2001.

The last three years, she lived in Fort Collins near her daughter. The family thanks the staff at MacKenzie Place, Emmalie Connor, Dr. Patti Palagi and Halcyon Hospice for their care and compassion. Special thanks to the families of Renee Wilson and Chris Schraeder, as well as numerous other friends for creating days and later moments of joy. She lived with Alzheimer's the last few years, but embraced it with strength, humor and determination. She truly had a love for life.

Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Lutheran Church of Nevada, or the Alzheimer's Association of Fort Collins.

A celebration of Janet's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Memorial Lutheran Church, 701 11th Street, Nevada Iowa with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial of the cremains will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the local care of Janet and her family.
