OBITUARY

MRS. JESSE BARKER.

Mrs. Elizabeth Barker, wife of Jesse Barker and one of the pioneer mothers of Story county, died at the home of her son, C. D. Barker, southwest of Nevada on Tuesday afternoon and her funeral was conducted from the Methodist church in this city by the pastor, Rev. Hardaway, on Thursday afternoon. Her death followed an illness of nine weeks, although its real cause is probably to be assigned to the decline incident to old age.

Mrs. Barker was born Elizabeth Mary Brown at Lexington, Greene county, New York, August 18, 1830 and she died near Nevada, Iowa, January 21, 1913, aged 82 years, 5 months and 3 days. She was married at West Union, New York, to Jesse Barker on January 10, 1850, and he now survives her after a married life of 63 years and 1 day. They remained in New York state until 1866, they emigrated westward. In company with others they journeyed to Iowa and were moving northwest in this state, where they crossed Story county, which to Mr. Barker seemed a good place to stop. They settled on a farm in the northeast part of Union township, where they continued to reside, until the infirmities of age caused them to make their home with their children. There their life was well spent, their golden wedding and their sixtieth anniversary in turn were celebrated, and the esteem of friends won and held. Of their nine children three survive, Charles D. and Eugene of this county and Della, now Mrs. Bennett, of Jefferson.
