James Crosby died Thursday January 23, 1913, at his home in South Zearing after an illness of only a week. Last Thursday he was stricken with the grippe, but was not bedfast until the latter part of the week when he began to suffer from an obstruction of the bowels which later developed into inflammation of the bowels and proved to be fatal. Mr. Crosby lived for a number of years on a farm about five and one half miles north of town, and upon retiring moved to Zearing where he since has made his home. He was a good citizens and neighbor and was well liked by all who knew him. The arrangements for funeral have not been completed.

Obituary of Jas. Crosby

James Crosby was born in Summerset Co., Pa. Jan. 9, 1851 and departed this life Jan. 23, 1913 aged 62 years and 14 days. He was united in marriage with Miss Lizzie Earnest of Summerset Co., Pa. March 25, 1875. To this union were born six children: Mrs. James Walton of New Providence, Ia., Mrs. Robert Jones of Marshalltown, Ia., J. W. Crosby of St. Anthony, Ia. and Walter C., Harvey and Frank Crosby of Zearing, Ia. With the exception of Mrs. Jones, who is quite ill all the children and their mother were at the bedside when the end came.

Mr. and Mrs. Crosby moved from Pennsylvania in 1877 to Ridott, Ill. where they lived six years and then they came to Hardin Co., Iowa and located on the farm which they still own. Seven years ago he retired from active farming and moved to Zearing where death overtook him.

In 1904 Mr. Crosby united with the Church of Christ at Grant Center, in whose faith he continued until his death. He was a kind jovial man who counted his friends by the score while he was enemy to on one. He will be greatly missed by the entire community.

Together with the mother and six children are left three brothers and one sister, fourteen grandchildren and a host of friends in mourn his sad and unexpected death.

The tender sympathy of the entire community goes out to this home.

The funeral was held Sunday Jan. 26, 1913 at 2 o'clock p. m. from the Church of Christ of Zearing, Rev. Jas. Fetter assisted by Rev. C. H. Stauffacher, officiating. Burial was made in the Mausoleum at Zearing.
