CARROLL

Mass of the Christian burial for Sharon Kay Helling, 50, of Carroll, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Rev. Timothy Schott will officiate.

Mrs. Helling died unexpectedly at her home in Carroll Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll, where there will be a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.

Burial will be in the Story City Municipal Cemetery.

Lector for the Mass will be Steve Haluska and gift bearers will be Sharon's daughters: Jaclyn and Allison. Music will be by Marci Anderson and Kathleen Macke.

Casket bearers will be Michael Emery, Austin Em-ery, Dave Mosman, John Helling, Dale Helling and Larry Helling.

A daughter of Junior and Shirley (Severeide) Thrasher, she was born Nov. 29, 1958, in Ames. She grew up in the Ames-Gilbert area and graduated from Gilbert High School in 1977. She then attended Iowa State University, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in physical education.

On June 20, 1981, she married Leon B. Helling in Ames at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. The Helling family has lived in Carroll for the past 16 years. During this time, she has been a substitute school teacher in the Carroll school district.

She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll and the Iowa State Alumni Association. She enjoyed attending Iowa State basketball games, tailgating for ISU football games, reading and spending time with friends and family.

Surviving include her husband, Leon Helling; daughters: Jaclyn Helling of Lawrence, Kan. and fiancé Cody Stamm of Des Moines and Allison Helling of Ankeny; her father, Junior Thrasher of Ames; her grandmother, Evvie Severeide of Story City; her mother and father-in-law, Richard and Ann Helling of New Hampton; a sister, Sue Price and husband Buddy of Gilbert; and brothers and sisters-in-law: John Helling and wife Linda of Harlan, Bernadette Christoph and husband Dave of New Hampton, Dale Helling and wife Joelene of West Des Moines, Larry Helling and wife Jan of Marion.

Mrs. Helling was preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Thrasher and her grandfather, Lester Severeide.
