Edward Joseph O'Connor
September 17, 1921 - December 30, 2012Edward Joseph O'Connor, 91, of Ames, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 while a resident of Northcrest Health Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:30 at St.Cecilia Catholic Parish with visitation beginning at 9:00 am. Burial will follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery with full military honors.
Ed was born on September 17, 1921 in Clarion, Iowa, the son of William and Bertille Broderick O'Connor. Ed graduated from New Hampton High School and Iowa State University with a degree in civil engineering. He served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean War where he attained the rank of Captain and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. Ed married Dorothy Kindred on September 7, 1946. He worked as a civil engineer for the DOT and retired in 1985. Upon retirement, Ed worked for FEMA where he assisted with disaster reconstruction.
Ed loved helping people in every way he could and was known to open his home to everyone. He enjoyed fishing, boating and hunting at his cabin on Lake Odessa and traveling. Above all, Ed enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ed was a member Theta Xi fraternity and was the oldest living member at the time of his death. He was also active with the American Legion, VFW, Elks, National Society of Professional Engineers and the Iowa Engineering Society.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son, William and a sister, Kay Glancy. He is survived by his daughter, Pat Bywaters of Nevada; a brother, James O'Connor of Davenport; sister, Sr. Mary O'Connor BVM of Dubuque and many nieces and nephews.
