Dean Bender, 91, of Nevada, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, after a year-long battle with cancer
Dean was born May 3, 1921, in Corning, Iowa to Clarence H. Bender and Blanche (Spencer) Bender. He grew up in Corning where, after high school graduation, he worked with his father as an auto mechanic at "Bender's Garage". He married Martha M. Blake on October 3, 1943, while serving in the US Army during WWII. They moved to Council Bluffs in 1957 and then to Nevada, Iowa in1966 where Dean was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, until his retirement in 1978.
Dean was a volunteer fire fighter, coin and stamp collector, Boy Scout leader, community band trumpet player and ham radio operator. For twenty years, he enjoyed winters in Pharr, Texas. Most recently, Dean was proud to have been a vital part in the planning and building of the Nevada Senior Center.
Dean is survived by his wife, Martha; his children: Nancy M. Bender, Daniel D. Bender (DeAnna), Marilyn A. Middleton (Rick), and Timothy A. Bender (LeAnn Baehman); his grandchildren: Jeff Hawkins, Nick Bender and Maggie Chadiha; and his great-grandchildren, Addie, Anthony and Allison Hawkins and newborn, Jayven Chadiha.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada Senior Center or the First United Methodist Church in Nevada.
