MARTINDALE

From Nevada Representative December 28, 1881

Gen. Martindale, father of Mr. Martindale, who resides a few miles west of town, died in Italy last week. He had been in very poor health for several years, and had crossed the ocean for his health. He was a prominent lawyer in New York, and the news of his death was a severe stroke not only to his family but to all who knew him. His son left here Tuesday for New York to receive his remains.--Sheldahl Journal.

SUBMITTER'S NOTE: According to the General's obituary in the New York Times, "His wife was with him at the time of his death, and he leaves one son, Henry Martindale, of Iowa, and two daughters--Mrs. James Breck Perkins, of Rochester, and Mrs. William Kind, of Albany." I therefore conclude that Henry Martindale, son of General Martindale, resided and few miles west of Shaldahl, Iowa (probably in Boone County, Iowa.) I must note, however, that according to other sources the General's place of death is inaccurately reported by the Sheldahl Journal. Both the New York Time obituary as well as Wikipedia record his place of death as Nice, France.
