Dorathy Ellen Twedt , 87, of McCallsburg, passed away Oct. 25, 2012, at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, where she was lovingly cared for following a stroke in October 2011. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Funeral services for Dorathy will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Poppe and Pastor Sandy Anenson officiating. Burial will be at Roland Cemetery.

Dorathy Ellen Halsted was born to Romayne and Ella (Wax) Halsted on March 15, 1925, in Strawberry Point. She attended school in McCallsburg, graduating in 1942. In 1964, she graduated from the first LPN class at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

On Jan. 31, 1942, she married Samuel H. Twedt, of McCallsburg. They lived for a short time in rural Roland, before moving to the Twedt family farm northwest of McCallsburg where she lived until the time of her illness.

They were parents of Deanne, deceased in 1960, an infant son, Donald, deceased in 1945, Stanley (Mary Nims), Steven (Barbara Shultz), both of rural McCallsburg, El Jean (Steve) Wildeboer and Beth (Curtis) Frohwein, both of Zearing.

Grandchildren, Brian (Janet) Wildeboer, Johnathan and Sam, of Ames, Kristine (Cory) Purvis, Rylee and Hunter, of Altoona, Zachary Twedt, of McCallsburg, Nathan (Kate) Frohwein, Nolan, Nicholas, Katrina, and Lucas, of Iowa Falls, Katie (Jason) Erickson, and Elizabeth, of McCallsburg, Sarah (Keith) Olson and Nellie, of Ankeny.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Imogene Thompson, and two brothers, Frank Halsted and Irven Halsted.

She was a life-long member of McCallsburg Presbyterian Church, and served on numerous county boards including Board of Health, Cancer Society, Council on Aging, Senior Housing and 4-H Extension Council. She was instrumental in founding Homemaker Health Aide Services later known as HOMEWARD of Story County.

She and Samuel enjoyed Bluegrass Music, John Deere Tractors, and camping. She later enjoyed following her grandchildren’s music and sporting events. She was also an avid fan of Iowa State men’s and women’s basketball.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing has been entrusted with the care of Dorathy and her family.
