Lillian Berniece Johnson was born on March 2, 1928 in McCallsburg, Iowa to Jennie (Erickson) and Alfred Johnson. She died on February 10, 2012 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. She was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. She graduated from Zearing High School where she enjoyed playing on the girls’ basketball team.
She married Harley Chelsvig on June 15, 1947 at Bethany Lutheran Church. Lillian was a bookkeeper for several central Iowa businesses. She was an active participant in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She served for six years as the President of the Iowa Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America. She represented the Iowa Chapter in Washington, D.C. for Lupus Awareness Day on Capitol Hill.
Lillian was an active volunteer and member at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa and Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Iowa. She was awarded a lifetime membership in the women’s group of the American Lutheran Church. She worshiped at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames and was actively involved in a small group bible study. She was a season ticket holder for the Iowa State women’s basketball team and loved to cheer on the Cyclones. She was a volunteer for many years with the Iowa Special Olympics and the Iowa Games. She loved gardening, reading, traveling and sharing her kringla with her family and friends.
Lillian is survived by two daughters, Kathleen (Jim) Hart of Clarksville, Maryland and Deborah (Darrel) Severson of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; two sons, Michael (Carolyn) Chelsvig of Nashville, Tennessee and Richard Chelsvig of Chicago, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Christine (Mark) Prendergast, Timothy (Jennifer) Hart, Megan Hart, Jonathan Hart, Joshua Severson, Jenna Severson, Shannon Chelsvig, Nicolas Chelsvig, and Kallie Chelsvig; four great-grandchildren, Kigan Prendergast, Karigan Prendergast, Ellis Hart, and Josilynn Hart; two sisters, Colleen Gochanour of Cumberland, Wisconsin and Norma (Wayne) Dudley of Parkersburg, Iowa; brother Dr. Robert (Dr. Christine) Johnson of Claremont, California; sister-in-laws Geneva Chelsvig of Ankeny, Iowa, and Gayle (Darrell) Harris of Des Moines, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitation will be from 5-7pm Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Northwestern Ave., Ames, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Friday, February 17, 2012 at Bethesda. Interment will be at the Roland Cemetery.
