Duane Jacob Hess
November 20, 1937 - July 20, 2011Duane Jacob Hess, 73, died on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at his home in Colo, Iowa. Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 am on Saturday, July 23 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Duane was born on November 20, 1937 in Waverly to Fred and Tina Marie (Pannhoff) Hess. He was a 1958 graduate of Waverly High School. Duane served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1955-1961. On October 31, 1959, he married Rose Marie Oulman at the St. Mary's Church in Waverly. Duane farmed in Bremer County and owned and operated Outdoor Escape in Waverly. He served as Trustee and President of the Waverly Archery Inc., coached and refereed of several local sports teams and participated in Boy Scouts of America. Duane was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church in Waverly and Colo. He was also a guitarist and soloist in the Esteem's band. He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman for over 60 years. Duane was the recipient of many state and national awards for his skill in archery. He also was quite a photographer of nature. He was a resident of Waverly until 2008 when he and Rose relocated to Colo.
Duane is survived by his wife Rose Marie Hess of Colo; children Jay and Mary Hess of Fairbank IA, Julie Russell of Colo, Janette and Gordon Hagen of Emmetsburg; grandchildren Sarah (Wade) Janssen, Caleb Hess, Timothy (Cheyenne) Noel, Matt Russell, Monica Russell and Bailey Hagen; great grandchildren, Alex Janssen, Samantha Janssen, Jacob Noel, Bianca Nelson, and Mason Brown ; 2 sisters Violet Radue of Boise, ID and Dorothy Cook of Aurora, CO; and a brother Merle (Eulalia) Hess of Waterloo, IA.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Harlan Hess, and grandson Michael Roland Noel-Russell on June 12, 2005.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for Duane at the Iowa Hospice of Marshalltown or St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo.
Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Duane and his family.
