John White Newman III
August 11, 1927 - October 4, 2011

John "Jack" White Newman III, 84 of Colo died on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 7 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada with Pastor David R. Burling officiating. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Calvary Cemetery in Brooklyn, IA.

Jack was born on August 11, 1927 in Montezuma, IA to John White and Frances Pearl (Johnson) Newman II. He was a 1945 graduate of Brooklyn High School. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. On September 27, 1949, he was united in marriage to Frances Jeanne Lievens in Brooklyn, IA. To this union, three daughters were born, Kathy, Janice, and Carol. After Fran's untimely death in 1996, Jack was married to Arlene Frances Oxley on September 20, 1997 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colo. They enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona. Jack was a member of the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. He loved the game of golf and in earlier years he enjoyed fishing trips. Jack retired on August 31, 1989 from the Story County Road Department.
Jack is survived by his wife, Arlene Newman of Colo; two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Tjelmeland of Carlisle and Janice (Murray) McConnell of Nevada; step-children, Diane Osmundson of Boise, ID, Kay Wilkening of Storm Lake, and Craig Meimann of Ankeny; 4 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; a step-sister, Diana (William) Rhinehart of Oskaloosa.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Fran on August 5, 1996, and a daughter Carol Banks on March 6, 2000.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 6 with the family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary.

A memorial fund has been established in loving memory of Jack.

Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Jack and his family.
