Donald Keller

July 31, 1927 - May 21, 2011
Ames, Iowa

Long time Ames resident, Donald V. Keller, died at home Saturday, May 21, 2011. His dog, Ollie, who was also his best friend, was at his side. Don requested that there be no funeral or memorial service.

Don was born on July 31, 1927, in Lincoln, Neb., to Clarence V. and Edna Jensen Keller. On Aug. 13, 1944, he married Bobetta Louise Betz in Marysville, Kan. Don and Bobbye were next door neighbors in Lincoln, Neb., when they eloped to Kansas to get married at 17. They were happily married for 62 years and had three children: Marsha L. Widdows (deceased), Susan R. (Vernon) Mitchell and Donald B. (Linda) Keller; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Don was preceded in death by his wife; daughter; parents; sister, June Sapiro; and brother, Bob Keller.

Don was a World War II Army Veteran. He was a surveyor in Nebraska and Washington. He then spent 36 years with the DOT in Ames working in Planning and Design. He also helped build several houses in the Garden Road area, including his own home.

Don was a member and past president of the ZA-GA-ZIG, Story County Shrine Club. He designed and built a Shriner Go-Kart that was used in local parades. He was also a member of the Iowa Masons. He enjoyed spending time in his yard playing horseshoes and growing a variety of plants/flowers.

Don had a gentle sense of humor and wrote entertaining and witty notes to his wife and children. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
