Ames, IowaFred "Dean" Christian, 87, of Ames, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2011, at his home.
Dean was born October 6, 1924, in Newark, Illinois to Fred and Lila (Henderson) Christian. He graduated Yorkville High School in 1942, and worked 18 years for the City of Yorkville in the Public Works Department, retiring in 1990. Dean married Sandra Latimer Merkel on September 2, 1989, in Viroqua, Wisconsin. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Nevada Lions Club, the Moose Lodge and was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Yorkville, Illinois.
Dean is survived by his wife Sandra of Ames; his son, Kenneth Christian of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; his daughters, Darla (Robert) Bohrer of Dayton, Ohio, Sheila (Tim) Robbins of Yorkville, Illinois, Donna Thomas of Plano, Illinois, Lisa (Steve) Chellew of Harlan, Iowa and Michelle (Stephen) Merkel-Brunskill of Mount Tabor, New Jersey; his grandchildren, Rachel and Travis Robbins, Kaitlyn Thomas, Jennifer Gilley and Josh Olson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Stella in 1988; and his sister, Charlotte Sharp.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada with a prayer vigil at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. A memorial visitation will also be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home in Yorkville, Illinois. Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Seward Mound Cemetery in Minooka, Illinois.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dean Christian Memorial Fund to be used by various organizations.
