From Stevens Memorial Chapel obituary, Ames, Story County, Iowa:

Vernon M. Vermeer
January 23, 1934 - April 10, 2012
Obituary

Vernon "Mike" Vermeer, 78, passed away at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on Tuesday, April 10, 2012. A visitation will be held at Stevens Memorial Chapel on Thursday, April 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Upon Vern's request, no formal services will be held.
Vern was the son of Edward R. and Gertrude Vermeer. He was born in Sioux Center, Iowa on January 23, 1934. After graduating high school in 1950, he contracted Polio and spent time rehabilitating at the Roosevelt Center in Warm Springs, Georgia. He then went on to earn a four-year degree from Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Teresa Tollefson on November 4, 1967. Vern worked his entire adult life for the Iowa Department of Transportation, finally retiring in 1999 as a statistician.

Vern could always be found building a gadget to make his life a little easier, gardening or fixing a vacuum cleaner (his side-business and hobby for many years). He was a good Christan man who valued his family and never let his disability slow him down.

He is survived by his wife, Terry Vermeer, of Ames; two daughters, Jennifer (Terry) Millard of Norwalk and Laura (Michael) Barr of Marion; his sisters, Carolyn Rohlf of Humboldt, Glenda Seely of Loveland, Colorado; his brother, Ethan (Anna Beth) of Orange City; his sister-in-laws Lois Vermeer of Littleton, Colorado and Toni Sutton of Golden Valley, Minnesota; and his grandchildren, Kevin, Brian and Noah Millard of Norwalk, and Hailee and Kelsey Barr of Marion.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Richard "Dick" Vermeer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his name to Hope Haven in Orange City, Iowa.
