Carmel Genean Buckels
December 24, 1968 - July 20, 2012Carmel Buckels, 43, of Ames, is free at last, and went home to be with her beloved Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, July 20, 2012. She departed from this life surrounded by her family and many friends at the Israel Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. Her legacy will be the wonderful friendship she offered to so many people and the inspiration she instilled in those friends and her family members about her great faith in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. She was very courageous in her long battle with cancer and never lost her steadfast faith in the Lord.
Carmel was born on December 24, 1968 and was the daughter of William and Mildred Buckels. She grew up on a farm between Gilbert and Story City, Iowa. She graduated from Gilbert High School in 1987. Carmel was a member of the marching band, jazz band, Future Homemakers of America, and the Spanish Club. She attended Iowa State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Management Information System program in 2001. Carmel was an avid Cyclone fan whose loud cheering could be heard across the stadium.
Following high school, Carmel traveled to New York to work as a Nanny for a year. She also worked at Bortells Ranch in St. Charles, Iowa as a cook and a counselor for seven summers. She lived and worked for a short time in Mesa, Arizona before moving back to Iowa. Carmel worked various other jobs including Coca-Cola and Principal Financial before starting at ING where she advanced to Supervisor for Annuity New Business, a position she held for the past ten years.Carmel was the proud mother of one son, Justus Buckels, who graduated from Ames High School in 2011. She loved children and she was very motherly to them, including the children she taught in Sunday school and assisted with during Vacation Bible School at Heartland Baptist Church.
Carmel is survived by her son, Justus Buckels; brother, William Buckels; sister-in-law, Ruth Buckels; one aunt and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mildred Buckels, her grandparents, two uncles, one aunt and four cousins.There will be a visitation with family and friends at Heartland Baptist Church, 3504 N. Grand Avenue, Ames, Iowa on Friday, July 27, 2012 from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Heartland Baptist Church.
Carmel's heart and love was with the children's ministry at her home church, Heartland Baptist Church. She requested that memorials be given in her honor to that program or the Israel Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.
