Robert (Bob) T. Berchtold
Bob Berchtold passed away due to complications from lung cancer on June 26, 2011 following a brief stay at the Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Adams Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Casual attire is appropriate.
Bob was born on Feb. 1, 1932 in Story City, IA. The day after he turned 18, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His active duty lasted until March 1954. Bob served on the USS Rendova, USS Coral Sea, and the USS Kearsarge during the Korean Conflict. Bob was a long standing member of the American Legion.
In 1954, Bob married Darlene Clemons of Nevada, IA. They made their home in Ames, IA where they raised two daughters, Roberta and Randa. Bob was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service in Ames for 30 years. After he retired in 1987, Bob and Darlene travelled extensively. One of Bob's greatest joys was taking bicycle rides around Ames each summer with his son-in-law Stan and grandchildren Jeff, Jessica, Ben and Kim.
Bob is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughter, Randa (Stan) Martin; grandchildren, Jeff Lambert, Jessica (Vinod) Joshi, Ben Martin, and Kimberly Franklin; great granddaughters, Madeleine, Abigail and Tabitha Joshi and great grandsons, Avery Lambert and Jax Franklin; sister, Sara (Leonard) Anderson and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Roberta Lambert and his parents, Ben & Jessie (Lee) Berchtold.
