From Adams & Soderstrum Funeral Home obituary, Story County, Iowa:

Cathryn Sulgrove Kapfer

BORN: November 10, 1910

DIED: December 27, 2011

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Cathryn Sulgrove Kapfer was born at home four miles south of Greenfield on gravel road 25 to Blanche and Byron Sulgrove on November 30, 1910. She grew up helping on the farm and going to country school, then rode horseback to high school in Greenfield until her family got a car. She and her sister learned to drive at 13 and 11, with months of practice across the farm yard; so that they could participate in music and be home before dark. She graduated from Greenfield high school in 1928. She attended Simpson College for a year before enrolling at the University of Iowa to graduate in English and history in 1933.

Her parents moved to town during the depression and housed boarders at their 107 NE 2nd Street home. Dr. T. A. Kapfer roomed there in 1933 while Cathryn taught fourth grade. They were married in 1934 and bought the house while her folks moved back to the farm. She helped in his medical practice, and daughter Kay was born in 1936. Widowed friend Jay Crawford's daughter Margaret moved in during junior high.

Cathryn loved her childhood dog and next dog and later her cat, each 16 year companions. Cathryn loved flowers and music. She sang in church choir and the county chorus. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star becoming a 50 year member of Greenfield Chapter No. 91. She planned outstanding dinners for Eastern Star and the Greenfield Country Club.

Divorced in 1956, Cathryn attended Iowa State to renew her teaching certificate. She worked as a field consultant for the Iowa Tuberculosis Association until retirement. She moved to Chico, California in 1983, residing on the almond ranch of her good friend horticulturist Dr. Joe Toy, whom she had met at Iowa State.

She moved to Ames, Iowa after Joe's death in 1992. She lived in Stonehaven Apartments for twelve years. She planned every detail of her 90th birthday celebration; it was her memorial to enjoy. At 94 Cathryn moved into Story County Medical Center Senior Care in Nevada, where she died a month past her 101st birthday on Thursday, December 29, 2011.

Cathryn is survived by her sister Mary Anderson in Kalamazoo, Michigan and family; daughter Kay (Don) Wall in Ames and family; and foster daughter Margaret (Peg) Bindner in North Mankato, Minnesota and family.

No services are planned. Memorials may be sent to Greenfield Eastern Star or Greenfield Presbyterian Church choir.
