Ray Fisher

DIED: March 12, 2012

LOCATION: Ames, Iowa

Ray William Fisher departed this life to be with his Lord and Savior on March 12, 2012 at Green Hills Healthcare Center, Ames, Iowa. Ray passed peacefully with Dottie, his devoted wife of 66 years, at his side.

Born to William J. and Mabel E. Fisher, November 27, 1921, Ray lived a long and full life and was adored by family, friends, and coworkers. He always made every one that he met feel like they were special and important.

Fisher is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lowe Fisher; sons, William Ray and Steven Lynn Fisher; daughter, Patti Fisher Hawley; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by beloved son, Mark Lowe Fisher.

A graduate of Iowa State University, Fisher was recruited into the Manhattan Project during the Second World War and continued with the Ames Laboratory until 1985. Continuing in his role at Ames Lab he joined the ISU faculty in 1963 and at the end of his tenure at Iowa State, Fisher was Director of the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute.

In 1981 Fisher was name Distinguished Iowa Scientist by the Iowa Academy of Science for his central role in the study of Iowa Coal as an environmentally acceptable fossil fuel and for his many years of service to science and society through his scholarly inventiveness and research. In 1979 Fisher was invited to a Russian international coal conference and was a guest lecturer at the Swedish Royal Engineering Academy in Stockholm. He received the American Lung Association Clean Air Award in 1985 and served on the Ames City Council from 1963 to 1971.

Ray has been active in church and served as a Board Member of Trinity Christian School in Mesa, Arizona along with many community service organizations. He was a fervent disciple of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He will be celebrated and missed by all of those that he has touched.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 10 am at Memorial Lutheran Church in Ames with the service following at 11.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Christian School, Mesa, Arizona or Memorial Lutheran Church, Ames.
