Betty Ruth Blagen, 92, of Ames, died after a brief illness on May 3, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
She was born Betty Ruth Theobald on November 25, 1919, in Chillicothe, Ohio, the daughter of Frank Edward and Tura Blanche Theobald.
Betty was baptized and confirmed in the Church of Christ in Dayton, Ohio. She graduated in 1937 from Steele High School, where she played the violin in the school orchestra.
In 1943 she met William S. Blagen at Bowman Field, Kentucky, where they were stationed. They were both Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army Air Corps – he as a glider pilot and she as a flight nurse. Betty served with the 811th Air Evacuation Squadron in the ETO and accompanied the first D-Day patients from Europe back to the United States. She was discharged with honors and the rank of First Lieutenant.
William and Betty were married on July 2, 1945 in Wantage, England. The service was conducted by Bishop Sheddon at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul.
After the war they lived for a time in Wessington, South Dakota – then moved to Madison, where Betty attended Dakota State College from 1950 to 1952. She continued her nursing career, serving at Community Hospital in Madison; Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa; and Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, where she retired in 1982.
Betty was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve Corps, Daughters of the American Revolution. In Ames, Betty was a faithful active member of First Christian Church and the Ames Women's Club. She was also an avid and knowledgeable quilter; she was a member of several local quilting groups, often traveling and giving talks on various facets of the art.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Louis Hildor III; her husband; and a half-sister, Helen Jasper.
She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Ermler of The Plains, Virginia, and Bonnie Ihlenfeldt of Warrenville, Illinois and her three grandsons, Todd and Nicholas Ihlenfeldt and Justin Ermler.
Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at First Christian Church in Ames on Wednesday, May 9, at 10:30 AM. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Madison, South Dakota, with graveside services on Thursday, May 10, at 11:00 AM.
