Norene Hughes, Nov. 24, 1941-June 6, 2012
Norene Hughes, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the Seton Hospital in Austin, Texas.

Norene was born Nov. 24, 1941, in Ames, the daughter of Rexford William and Edna Marie (Godfrey) Hughes. She graduated from Milford Township Consolidated School in 1959. She earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and another bachelor’s degree in business administration degrees from Simpson College of Indianola in 1962 and her master’s degree in business administration at the University of Washington, in Seattle, Wash., in 1964.

Always wanting to be a career woman, Norene had started working as an A&W car hop in Ames at the age of 14 and continued working at various stores and offices through her college years. When studying in Seattle, she worked at the Boeing Aircraft Corporation. Her next location was the Panama Canal Zone working for the comptroller’s office from 1964 to 1970.

When she returned to the United States, Norene married Robert H. Thieme of New Jersey. They lived in West Virginia and finally settled in Austin, Texas, in 1972. They divorced in 1983. The next year Norene met Daniel Sheehan and they spent many wonderful years together. They enjoyed traveling together and cheering for the Texas Longhorns. They had also sponsored the spaying and neutering of homeless cats through one of the local veterinarians in Austin. Daniel died in 2010.

Norene had retired from her position as financial administrator with the State of Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation in 1998.

Norene is survived by her brother, Dale S. Hughes, of Marion; sisters, Linda Meyers (Ronald), of Story City, and Karen Witzleben, of Durham, N.C.; sister-in-law, Loretta Hughes (Loyd), of Ames; nine nieces and nephews; and 15 grandnieces and grandnephews.

Her parents; brother, Norman; brother, Loyd; and nephew, Rexford, preceded her.

There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery officiated by Jill Leveck, pastor of the Pleasant Grove Church. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, which has been entrusted with the arrangements for Norene.
