From Story County Watchman April 7, 1905

Ames, April 4.--Sherman Miller, a resident of this city, committed suicide yesterday by shooting himself in the head with a 32 caliber revolver. The probable cause of his rash act was temporary insanity, as it has been found that he had dropped some intimation to parties that he had conversed with that led them to think that he was somewhat unbalanced. During the day he went into one of the local hardware stores and purchased a revolver. He did not make any explanation as to what he wanted with it, and did not seem to be particular as to the kind or price, but bought the first one shown him. At the time he purchased a box of cartridges and loaded the gun before leaving the store. He immediately went to his home in seeming good spirits. On reaching the house he gave each of the children some small change and talked in his usual manner. He then entered the house and going into a bed room shut the door. In a short time a report was heard, but his wife thought it to be the stove crackling. However, as an investigation failed to reveal anything of the kind she then opened the door into the room which her husband had entered. As she did so to her horror she found him lying on th floor with the smoking gun still clinched in his hand. The alarm was given and in a few minutes assistance was at hand. A physician was summoned but efforts to revive him were of no avail and he lived but a short time after the shot was fired. The bullet had penetrated the brain and passed out of the opposite side going thru a door and finally lodging in the wall.
