Ex-Sheriff O. G. Ashford Dead
Mr. O. G. Ashford died Wednesday morning Aug. 31, 1904 at the age of 57 yrs. 9 mo. and 26 da. at this home in this city. He was seized by a coughing spell and death came suddenly. Mr. Ashford was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, Nov. 5, 1846. He was married to Miss Josephine Lones at Lisbon, Ohio, February 1, 1867. They came to Story county in 1857 and located two miles east on what is now the Welty farm. Later they moved on their farm near East Indian where they resided until 1891 when Mr. Ashford was elected sheriff. He retired from the sheriff's office in 1896 and for some years owened and managed the Murrie Hotel. A year a go last winter he sold the Hotel and moved into his residence east of the High School.
Mr. Ashford was well known throught Story County. He was of a very jovial disposition and every body was his friend more than one of his friends can relate some joke Mr. Ashford has played on them and if the tables turned he could enjoy the joke just the same. Mr. Ashford leaves a wife and seven children, George, T. L., John, Charles, Bert, and the daughters Carrie and Cassie to mourn his loss.

George, Charles and John Ashford are in Nome, Alaska, and have not yet received the news of their fathers death, and of course could not get here in time for the funeral which will be held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2:30 Rev. W. B. Sanford officiating. The Mason will have charge of the services at the grave. The entire community extend their sympathy to the family.
