From Story County Watchman September 25, 1903

Col. Scott Dead.

Word reached this city Wednesday that Col. John Scott, a former resident of this city had just died at his home in Des Moines, and that the funeral would be held Thursday in Des Moines.--The Col. was a native of Ohio and early came to this city where he made his home unitl going to Des Moines some six years since. He was in his 80th year, and the end came as the result of old age.

He was always prominent in the political history of Story county and Iowa having held local offices, state senator and lieut-governor of the state. He was also high in the Masonic order, having held some of the higher positions in the order; also in the G. A. R. He was through the Mexican war, and the war of the rebellion and reached the position in the latter of lieut-colonel.--Mrs. Scott and his daughter Mary survive him to look forward to the future meeting. The remains were brought to this city last evening and will be cared for this afternoon by the Masonic order of this city doing the work, the members being notified to be at their hall at one o'clock this afternoon.

He lived in this county for a generation and was well known to our people and the attendance at the last rites will be quite large even with the short notice given. His prominence in the affairs of the state and county indicate how he stood locally both politically and socially and any comments upon his standing and lengthy eulogy is scarcely necessary.
