From Story County Watchman May 29, 1903

Arthur Meighen of Newell, an academic student at the Iowa State College ws accidentally drowned in the pond west of campus Monday afternoon. He was taking a recreation swim. When within ten feet of the shore he allowed himself to float, but unwittingly caught in the swift current and dragged under beyond any possible aid. When he was brought ashore thirty minutes had elapsed since his first struggles and the hope for restoration was small. Nevertheless, untiring efforts were made to bring him back to life, but all to no avail. His parents at Newell were telegraphed, also his brother who is studying law at Iowa City. They arrived in time to take him home for burial Wednesday morning. On Tuesday morning 11:45 special chapel services were held over the sad incidents which fate seems to bring upon the school every year.
