From Story County Watchman February 27, 1903
The nine-year-old boy of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rierson living seven miles north of this city was struck on the head by a falling tree on Saturday and died several hours later. Two young men were cutting down a tree on the Eggland farm just northof the Rierson farm and noticed the boy coming across the field but thought nothing of it and went on cutting. They did not know he was so near until the tree fell and they found it had fallen on him. He was at once taken from his perilous position and it was found that a limb had crushed his skull. He was taken to the Rierson home and an operation performed by doctors from Roland and Story City but of no avail for he died at 11 o'clock p. m. Saturday night. He never regained consciousness. This was a sad affair and the family have the sympathy of many friends and neighbors.
