From Story County Watchman May 9, 1902
The fast mail going east due here about midnight Wednesday morning was wrecked two miles west of Ames while on the College grade because of the spreading of the rails. The wreck was so serious that a delay was made to many of the trains. The mash up was a bad one so far as the cars were concerned but not a railroad or postofficials was killed though all were more or less shaken up in the shock of the collision. A tramp riding on top of one of the cars was killed and nothing on the body indicated who or what he might be.
