From Story County Watchman February 7, 1902
Ruby, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mathews, was born near Iowa Centre, Nov. 6, 1898, and died Monday evening, Jan. 27, 1902, of that dread disease, scarlet fever, aged 3 years, 2 months and 1 day. She was the youngest of a family of three children and the only girl. She was a very bright and winsome little darling, and was the joy and pride of the home. Altho' all was done for her that kind and loving hands could do, yet she suffered intensly the short time she was sick and death alone relieved her of her pain. But what is our loss is truly her gain for we know the little lamb is "safe with Jesus."
