From Story County Watchman September 13, 1901
Joseph Lodge, a highly respected citizen and esteemed pioneer died suddenly yesterday about noon. He was up town in the morning apparently as well as usual. Being overcome with a sinking spell he was taken home at 311 South Madison street. Here, despite the efforts to revive him he gradually grew weaker and passed away peacefully at 12 o'clock. The funeral will take place from the house tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mr. Lodge was 78 years old and has been a resident of the county for the past half century. He leaves a wife, four sons, and three daughters, George of Omaha, Neb; Charles of Cedar Rapids; Albert of Marshalltown; Harry of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Dora Frink of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Elizabeth Swafford of Nevada; and Miss Ella Lodge of Iowa City.--Iowa City Republican.
In the same paper:
Last week Mrs. H. L. Swafford receved word that her father had just died at his home in Iowa City and at once started for that city arriving in due time. The funeral took place Saturday and an account from an Iowa City paper will be found elsewhere. He was one the older residents of the city and had held many positions of honor and trust. He was also a veteran of the war of the rebellion.
