From Story County Watchman January 25, 1901

Colo, Jan. 24.--John McCartney, one of the older residents of Story county, and the proprietor of a hotel at this place for several years, was instantly killed here about 4:30 o'clock this morning by being struck by the second section of the Chicago & Northwestern's overland limited passenger No. 2. The body was not found until about 7 o'clock. McCartney is a man about 65 years of age. He leaves a family of grown-up children.

Last week you gave an account of the death of Mr. McCartney by being run over by the cars at this point. It should have been Geo. McArthur. He was an old time resident of this place and well and favorably known throughout the country.
