OBITUARY.--At his residence in Belle Plaine township, April 6th, of heart disease, A. Guthrie, aged 66 years, 2 months and 17 days. Mr. Guthrie was born Jan. 20th, 1834, in Preston county, W. Va. He moved to Clark county, Mo., where he married Demaritis E. Dunham, Dec. 2, 1858, thence moved to Story county, Iowa, in 1864, thence to Gentry county, Mo., in 1877; thence to Marshall county, Kansas, in 1881; thence to Norton county. Mr. Guthrie had been unexceptionally well the day before his death and had spent a portion of the day in Norton. He got up in the night to wait on a grandchild and dropped dead as he was returning to bed. He leaves a wife and eight children, six sons and two daughters. He was very highly esteemed by all who knew him. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. S. L. Seamon to a very large audience, including several citizens of Norton.

The above was taken from a Norton county, Kansas, paper at that time and we give it form the fact that he was well known to all the older residencts in this county, having lived in what is known as the Mullen settlement just south east of Nevada. Mrs. Frank Fultz* is a sister of Mrs. G. and they were related to Messrs. Applegates and Halleys*.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. Frank Fultz" refers to Frances (Dunham) Fultz, wife of William H. Fultz and sister of Demaritis (Dunham) Guthrie. Their mother, Elizabeth Jane Cronkleton, married twice: firstly to Thomas H. Dunham and secondly to Wilson Halley. Thus, there were seven Halley children that were the Dunham girls' half siblings. Martha Jane Halley, their eldest half-sister, married Joseph W. Applegate and this is the referenced Applegate connection.
