From Story County Watchman April 6, 1900
Lewis Johnson living north of Nevada near McCallsburg, was brought before the insane commission Saturday, but as he appeared to be sane at the time nothing was done and he was given his freedom and he returned home. Sunday Mr. Johnson secured a large corn knife and went out into his corn field where he cut his throat in a terrible manner. He also struck himself with the inflicting a severe wound on the head. After finishing his murderous work he went back to the house. His wife immediately summoned a physician to dress the wounds, but he is now lying in critical condition. It is supposed he committed the rash act while temporarily insane.-- Times R.
Mr. Johnson died Wednesday evening from the injuries received as above and the funeral will be from his home in Warren township and the remains are to be interred in the Nevada cemetery today. He leaves a wife and child to mourn his loss and look forward to the future. he was born in Denmark and came to this country many years ago and resided in this city for number of years moving to his farm in Warren. His many friends will be sorry to note sad ending but with hopes for a better time in the land beyond the skies.
