John Koons was born in Dauphin Co. Penn. March 7 1840, and died at his home in Ames, June 6th 1899, aged 59 years, 2 mo. and 27 days. Mr. K. was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Furror Dec. 25, 1860. Seven children blessed this union six of whom reside in Story Co. at the present time. The seventh and youngest died in infancy. His wife died Feb. 21, 1894 and on Jan. 19, 1875 he was again united in marriage to Martha E. Shalley, who survives him. They moved to Illinois in 1878, lived there 8 years, afterward moving to Story Co. where he has resided up to the time of his death. His sickness was of long duration lasting nearly three years,but he bore his sufferings patiently. He united with the Church of Christ in the spring of 1885 and has since lived a true christian life and when the summons came he was found waiting and quietly fell asleep with his Savior. He was a good citizen, a kind husband and an indulgent father and will be sorely missed by all.
