From Story County Watchman February 17, 1899
DIED--At his residence in this city on Wednesday evening at an advanced age Mr. J. C. Elzy. He had been ill only a few days and was not considered dangerous up to a few hours before the end was at hand. He was one of the oldest residents of this county having settled her every many years ago and always did his due share to advance the interests of the county and community and stood high in the esteem of all with whom he had business relations. In fact he was one the few men who was to be relied upon. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Henderson assisted by Rev. Brown after which the remains were laid to rest to await the last call. Many of our older citizens and many others were present and aided in the last sad rites. He leaves a wife, four sons and three daughters to mourn his loss, all of whom were present save one daughter who arrived to late for the service.
