From Story County Watchman February 10, 1899
Charles Croft, of Slater, was frozen to death Saturday morning. He had been to Madrid on his bicycle, and while in that place it is alleged that he secured more liquor than he could safely carry. He mounted his bicycle late in the evening and attempted to ride back. When about a mile from Slater he was unable to guide his wheel, and fell off. He was found Sunday morning in the road, his face downward, frozen to death. Croft was about 28 years old, single and leaves an aged mother.
