From Story County Watchman July22, 1898
Monday morning Seth Humphrey died at his home in this city from a stroke of paralysis. He has long been a resident of this city and is well known to nearly all. The remains were interred in the city Wednesday with appropriate services by Rev. Shrader assisted by Rev. Inness. Mr. H. was a native of Pike county, Pa, and born April, 1840. He worked at his trade as a blacksmith, and returning home late was stricken by stroke of apoplexy and fell to the ground never regaining consciousness. He came to this city in 1870 since which date he has been a resident. He was a member of Co. B 8th regulars enlisting in June, 1863. He was married twice, and had one daughter by the first, Blanche, who came to attend his funeral. His wife was with him at the last and did what could be done to aid him, but all efforts were unavailing and he passed to the great beyond. He was of a kindly disposition and stood well with those who had his friendship, and was strictly honest and industrious, many a time going out of his way to do good and accommodate friends who were greatly surprised at this sudden closing of his life. All trust the future may be a better one for him as well as for all the rest of this earth when they may be called to the unknown home of the future.
