From Story County Watchman June 17, 1898

Ontario.

A sad accident resulting in death occurred south of Ontario last Friday evening. Little Tommy a nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Duge Gilchrist fell out of a tree, a distance of fifteen feet, striking on top of his head, chrushing his skull and killing him. He lived about six hours, never regaining consciousness. The funeral was held at the family residence Sunday and conducted by W. H. Zenor, a large number of friends and relatives attending. The pall bearers were Lewis Eastwod, Johnny Moser, Earling Zenor and Arthur Ellis, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Ontario cemetery. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in this their sad bereavement.

Friday last Tommy Gilchrist, the ten-year-old son of D. Gilchrist, west of Ames, fell from a tree to the ground, ten or fifteen feet below. His skull was crushed and he lived but an hour after the accident.
