From Story County Watchman June 3, 1898

E. W. Lockwood died at Mount Pleasant yesterday and the remains are expected in this city to-day, and the funeral will be held under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity either Saturday or Sunday, which date will not be known until this evening. It will be remembered that Mr. Lockwood was injured by being thrown from a carriage several years since and has been an inmate of the hospital ever since. He held many offices by virtue of the sufferages of our people and stood high in the esteem of all. His wife and son are now residents of this city and all extend to them their sympathy in this hour of their trial. Further particulars will be given next week.

From Story County Watchman June 10, 1898

Last week we noted the death of E. W. Lockwood at Mount Pleasant and that the remains would reach here that evening. They came on the evening train and were cared for by the Masonic Lodge of this city who accompanied them to his residence and as they were in a condition not of the best they were at once taken to the cemetery and interred therein. The attendance was larger than was to have been expected as none were anticipating the work at th time and those present died all that could have been required. The lodge committee reported the following resolutions which will be passed at their coming regular:

WHEREAS,--It has pleased the ruler of the universe to remove by death from our lodge, our brother, E. W. Lockwood, therefore be it
Resolved, that in his death we have lost a worthy and faithful brother and Masonry one of the its most ardent and earnest co-laborers.
Resolved, That we entend to the stricken family our condolence and present the with a copy of these resolutions;
Resolved, That the action of the lodge be made of record on our books and published in the local papers and that the charter of the lodge be draped for thirty days.--
Wm. Gates, J. A. Mills, J. F. Gillespie, Committee.
