From Story County Watchman April 22, 1898

KILLED--Saturday night Sylvester Bryant was killed on the North Western railroad just east of Ames. It is now know just how it occurred but it is supposed he was on his way to this place and under the influence of intoxicants of some sort, and failing to hear the approaching train did not get out of its way, or that he was trying to make his way back on a freight not wishing to wait for the passenger some hours later and fell off as noted. A jury was summoned and they returned a verdict of death by the cars but that the road was not responsible therefor. The remains were brought to Nevada for interment. He was unmarried and lived with his brother just north of the railroad and was aged about 36 years.
