From Story County Watchman September 10, 1897

Collins Clipper: ....Miss Minnie Hoke of Union City, came to the bedside of her aunt, Mrs. Denniston Tuesday of last week and was with her until the sad end came....

In the same paper:

Collins Liberator: ....When the spirit of Mrs. J. M. Denniston crossed th silent river, last Thursday morning to enter the home above, the life of a noble Christian woman closed. She had been a patient sufferer for years with what is known as Tompkin's disease, or inflammation of the lymphatic glands. All that medical skill could do was done and loving hands tenderly nursed her throughout her long illness, but to no relief, and the summons finally came. She was conscious to the last and died with a smile for her husband, children and other relatives who who were to be bereft of a loving wife and a kind and affectionate mother and sister. Nothing grander can be said of anyone after death than that the world is better for the departed having lived in it, and this can be truly said of Mrs. Denniston. The funeral was held at the M. P. church at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Sparks. The church was beautifully decorated and floral tributes were in profusion, the ladies of the aid society of which Mrs. Denniston was a member contributing a handsome design with the word "Mother" formed out of white blossoms, with the rest of the decorations. The remains were interreed in the Collins cemetery, and were followed to the silent city by a large cortege....
