From Story County Watchman February 12, 1897
Colo Watchman
Bert Bishop aged about 25 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Bishop, living two miles south-east of Colo, shot and almost instantly killed himself with a revolver Saturday. He had been suffering for months with rheumatism and was almost helpless. While his mother and brother were out in the yard looking after some poultry he managed to crawl to his brother's trunk and took out the revolver with which he shot himself. Dr. Hostetter of this place was called, but found him dead. The county coroner was then notified by telephone, but did not arrive until late in the afternoon. A jury was empaneled in the evening, who returned a verdict of death by his own hands. Bert Bishop returned from the Pacific coast last August with his brother, where they had spent the last four years and where the former contracted rheumatism. The funeral was held to-day in the United Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. Chas. Pickford.--Marshall Times-Republican.
