From Story County Watchman March 13, 1896

We have noted heretofore the serious illness of L. Q. Hoggatt of Ames. Word was received here yesterday that he had died the evening before and the funeral would be held this afternoon at his residence just west of that city. He was aged 82 years and had been a resident of this county for more than forty years. He has been one of the prominent figures in the past and stood high in the esteem of his friends, and his enemies were as bitterly opposed to him, but now one and all will do him the honor to say that he did what he believed to be right, and for the best. He has been the nominee for member of congress from this district several times, and held numerous positions of trust and few of profit. There is no doubt but the funeral will be largely attended, and it is supposed that it will be held under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which he was an honored member.
