From Story County Watchman May 25, 1894

DIED.--At their home in Ontario, Iowa, of cancer, May 20, 1894, Mrs. Purthena Thurman, aged 64 years, 10 months an 19 days.

Mrs. Thurman, whose maiden name was Plummer, was born in Flemming county, Kentucky, July 1st, 1829 and was married to Enoch Thurman, Sept. 18, 1850, they moved to Marion county, Indiana, in March 1853; and in May 1856, they came to Story county, Iowa, where they have since lived. They have been blessed with four children, all girls, two of whom died in early life. Sister Thurman united with the Church at 15 years of age, and she has lived an unassuming, consistent, devoted, christian life.

Funeral services were held in the Christian church at Ontario, Tuesday morning, May 22, by O. H. Truman her former pastor, assisted by Elder Hester, of Des Moines. A large concourse of relatives and friends followed her remains to the cemetery where she was buried beside her children. For several weeks she was a great sufferer, but she bore her pain with fortitude and patience. She was prepated and willing to die. Her character was a noble combination of Christian graces, while her life was essentially domestic. As a wife and mother shone brightest. She loved her home and made it the center of her work. Love, peace and contentment reigned over her daily labors and cast a spell over her household. Day after day and year after year she was the same, faithful to duty, patient in affliction, kind in all.

Sister Thurman leaves behind a husband, two daughters, two brothers and two sisters. The husband and daughters had the blessed priviledge in ministering to her wants through her sickness, and of learning the sweet lesson of her life. One sister was also with her. She has entered into her rest and her works follow her.
