Philip Chaffin, who lived about 2 miles west of town, died last Friday, May 4th, after a long and severe illness, aged about 52 years. His wife died in 1888, since which time he had kept house with his children. He was a cousin of Mrs. R. W. Kirk* of Nevada. As a man and a citizen he was highly esteemed. Mr. C. enlisted in the service Sept. 1st, 1862, and was a member of Co. C, 78th Illinois Inf. and served until the close of the war. he was with Sherman in most of his long marches and hard fought battles, and was a brave soldier. The funeral occurred in the C. P. Church here on Sabbath 6th. The members of Erving Post went to the house and brought the remains to the church. The C. P. choir furnished very beautiful and appropriate music. Rev. R. A. Ferguson conducted the service assisted by Rev. G. L. Wilson and Rev. John Doty. The house was filled to its utmost capacity, all testifying their respect for the departed. Among those attending the funeral from a distance we noticed Auditor King and Clerk Morse, also Mr. and Mrs. Kirk, of Nevada.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Philip Chaffin was the son of Thomas Jefferson Chaffin and Sarah Rice. Isabel (Griffith) Kirk, referred to as Mrs. R. W. (William R.) Kirk, was the daughter of John Mitchel Griffith and Bridget Rice. Sarah Rice and Bridget Rice were sisters, thus Philip Chaffin and Isabel Griffith were cousins.
